How do I become a Foster Carer?
How do I become a Foster Carer?
If you are reading this article you are in the right place to start becoming a foster carer.
But may I suggest another question… Who do I become a foster carer with?
You may not know that there two routes into fostering. One is to become a Local Authority foster carer or you can become a foster carer with an independent fostering agency such as ours.
What to look for:
Initial Contact:
● Whichever route you choose, it is all about support and your first contact with a fostering team will be the most important. This will be the first indication of how your fostering agency responds to you throughout your fostering career.
How do I make Contact:
● We would advise you make telephone contact initially to see if you can speak directly with someone who can provide answers to your questions.
● Is someone willing to visit you, without too much delay, to informally discuss in more detail your interest in making a difference to a young person’s future.
At the meeting:
● Is that person an experienced social worker who understands the fostering task?
● Are they professional in their approach?
● Do they listen to what you have to say?
● Are you given detailed information about the assessment process to become a foster carer?
● Would you feel reassured that you would receive support from that person and the agency?
